A friend recently showed me an interesting video that shows the comparison of earth compared to the sun and the sun compared to other stars. The earth is roughly 12,756 km in diameter while the sun is 1,392,000 km in diameter. About 1,300,000 earths could fit inside our sun. However, our sun is just a runt in comparison to many other stars.
Pollux, an orange giant is around 8* the size of our sun or 11,136,000 km. Moving even bigger Archturus, a red giant, is 24* the size of the sun or 33,408,000 km. Its hard to imagine even this scale and yet even this is tiny in comparison to Antares a star 10,000 times brighter than our own and 700* bigger! This comes out roughly to 974,400,000 km in diameter.
Although those are big, they dont come close to the largest known star which is VY Canis Majoris. To give a small hint at its size, around 7 quadrillion earths could fit inside of it and is somewhere around 1950* the size of our sun coming out to ~2,714,400,000 km in diameter give or take a few hundred million.
Those alone make us nothing more than a microscopic speck.. however there are roughly between 200 and 400 billion stars in our own galaxy which spans 100,000 light years (1 lightyear = ~9,500,000,000,000 kilometers), and even then there's estimated to be about 135 billion galaxies in the known universe.
All this really makes you think about why are we here, whats the point of all this?
And now for visuals... the videos a little cheesy but it does get the point across
